Low voter turn-out worries Perth shoo-in

Patrick Possum Gorman, the Labor candidate with the unusual middle name, says he's worried about low voter turnout at the Perth by-election.

The Labor candidate considered a shoo-in to win the Perth by-election says he's worried about low voter turnout and suggests the Electoral Commission hasn't done enough to increase awareness.

Former state secretary and ex-Kevin Rudd staffer Patrick Gorman is expected to hold on to Perth for Labor, a federal seat vacated by lawyer Tim Hammond for family reasons.

Interest is rock bottom because the Liberals haven't bothered to field a candidate, despite a slim 3.3 per cent margin.

In the first 10 days of pre-polling, early votes were down 41 per cent on the same time during the 2016 federal election.

"I'm concerned that pre-poll voting is low," Mr Gorman told reporters on Friday.

"I think the Electoral Commission has a lot of questions to answer at the end of this election as to why it was so low here in the west.

"We've done everything we can."

A record 15 candidates are contesting Perth including controversial former Liberal backbencher Ian Britza, who threw his hat in the ring for the New England by-election in November.

Independent Paul Collins, a Liberal party member, seems the most prominent opponent for Mr Gorman, political analyst Peter Kennedy says.

Labor is also expected to easily win Fremantle with Josh Wilson, the port city's former deputy mayor who held the seat previously with a 7.5 per cent margin but had to resign over his dual citizenship.

Polling closes at 6pm on Saturday.
