The owner of an alleged puppy farm where dogs were kept in appalling conditions has been hit with a record number of animal welfare charges.

Specialist police and the RSPCA raided the alleged puppy farm at Glenarbon, in the state's southwest, in January and seized 81 dogs and puppies, as well as 10 cats.

The RSPCA on Wednesday announced the owner of the property had been charged with 215 animal welfare offences.

The 40-year-old man had been summonsed to appear in Goondiwindi Magistrates Court in May, the animal welfare group said.

The RSPCA will allege the dogs and cats were kept in "appalling" conditions, including being tethered near the remains of other animals.

It will also be alleged they were not given proper shelter or water and a number had suffered injuries requiring urgent treatment.

Breeds seized included mostly American Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Australian and American Bulldogs, as well as French Bulldogs.

More than 50 animals have since been rehomed, the RSPCA said.
