Meghan kicks off her shoes as royals hit Bondi Beach for Fluro Friday

Crowds have gathered at Sydney's iconic Bondi Beach ahead of the arrival of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

The normally cool crowd at Bondi beach caught royal fever as a casual Prince Harry and Meghan spent the morning.

Hundreds waited patiently as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex took part in a mental health discussion before meeting the waiting crowds.

Meghan wore a beach-appropriate brown striped maxi-dress by Martin Grant and heeled wedges, while Harry wore chinos and a blue shirt.

As soon as she hit the sand, Meghan took off the shoes. It was a stark contrast to the time her sister-in-law Catherine kept her shoes on while visiting Manly beach.

They met surfing group OneWave, an organisation raising awareness for mental health and wellbeing in a fun way.

They were presented with their own leis, before joining the circle as part of the group's mental health awareness session "Fluro Friday".

The couple sat on the sand and linked their arms around other members of the circle, as the group discussed their experiences with mental health - an issue championed by Prince Harry.

Bondi local Charlie Adams is happy the royal couple are using their influence to shine a spotlight on mental illness and OneWave.

"I think there is still a lot of stigma around mental health and it's great that Harry and Meghan are addressing that here today," Ms Adams told AAP at the beach.

Bondi 'mermaid' Lizmania, accompanied by her dog Tipseatoes, was dressed in neon pink to mark the event.

"I'm here to give them both a hug and spread the love, it's a day for love," Lizmania told AAP.

The couple have also met members of the public gathered at the popular eastern Sydney beach.

They have several more engagements in Sydney on Friday.
