Melbourne anti-vax doctor agrees to stop practising

Melbourne anti-vaccination doctor John Piesse has agreed to a legally binding undertaking to stop practising as a doctor.

A Melbourne doctor who bragged about getting children out of compulsory vaccinations has agreed to stop practising as a doctor.

Dr John Piesse on Thursday entered into the legally binding undertaking with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, which may still suspend his registration.

He was filmed speaking at a Melbourne anti-vaccination rally about how he helped parents get out of vaccinating their children and has been under investigation by AHPRA since August last year over the concerns.

Dr Piesse's agreement to stop practising as a doctor is an interim measure while health authorities continue to investigate.

In a video from an anti-vaccination event published earlier this month by the Herald Sun, Dr Piesse explained how he tried to get around the "no jab, no play laws".

"I am a doctor who has been working hard for 18 months to try and help parents get exemption from 'vaccinated pain for vaccinated play', with mixed success," he said in the video.
A woman from Dr Piesse's clinic said they had been "supporting" 600 families thanks to his work.

After news of the investigation into Dr Piesse broke, the anti-vaxxer community launched a fundraiser to raise $100,000 to help him retain his medical registration.

Both state and federal health ministers have called for AHPRA to throw the book at Dr Piesse.
