Memorial for Melbourne terror victim

A memorial has been held in Melbourne for Hao Kai who was gunned down during a siege at Brighton.

The Melbourne Chinese community has held an emotional memorial for Brighton terror victim Hao Kai.

The community gathered at the Mount Waverley Youth Club on Sunday afternoon for a service for the hotel clerk who was gunned down by terrorist Yacqub Khayre at a Brighton apartment complex on Monday.

Mr Hao's mother spoke to the crowd, saying: "Once you lose a child you cannot survive".

His father was pictured sitting with his head in his hands.

Women from the Chinese community sat in the hall making white flowers out of paper which were worn by the crowd during the service.

Hao was an only child and his parents say they were relying on him to provide for them in their old age.

The Melbourne Chinese community has launched fundraising efforts to help Mr Hao's family.

He leaves behind a wife and child.

Terrorist Yacqub Khayre died in a hail of bullets on Monday, after killing Mr Hao, taking an escort hostage and wounding three police.
