The Turnbull government doesn't have a plan B to legalise same-sex marriage, and doesn't look like settling on one any time soon.

The Senate this week rejected enabling legislation for a February plebiscite after Labor, the Greens and key cross benchers voted against the coalition and One Nation.

"We have no plans to take any other measures on this issue," Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told Neil Mitchell on 3AW radio on Friday.
