Members of the NSW Greens have taken to social media to express their remorse over an article published in an internal party magazine which questioned the legitimacy of transgender matters.
An internal review will be conducted after Marrickville branch member Margot Oliver penned an article which criticised her own peers for allowing a transgender woman to convene The Greens' women's working group.
"I am challenging Greens members to question the uncritical transactivist agenda that m2f (male-to-female) trans people must be regarded as legally, socially and biologically no different from natal women," Ms Oliver wrote.
"We can support the right of everyone to be free to express their sex, sexuality and gender the way we each want to live - but not at the expense of women."
The article came to the attention of LGBTQI+ activist and Change.org executive director Sally Rugg who described it as "bigoted" and "transphobic".
Greens MP for the inner Sydney seat of Newtown Jenny Leong was also quick to condemn the article and distance the party from its contents.
"It is completely unacceptable that a transphobic article was published in the latest edition of GreenMail, the Greens members internal magazine," she said.
"We are so sorry that this happened."
In a joint statement, Greens NSW co-convenor Rochelle Flood confirmed the party is steadfast in its belief that the views are "harmful and should never have been published."
"The Greens NSW will be seeking to review how this article was approved and to ensure that our members magazine is able to be a place for respectful debate without undermining people's rights or conflicting with Greens principles.
NSW Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi also slammed the article as "completely inconsistent with Greens' policies and principles."
But others have come to Ms Oliver's defence, with some questioning the nature of the backlash.
