NSW greyhound body defends spin spend

Greyhound Racing NSW has defended its increased marketing budget, saying some was spent promoting dog welfare and re-homing.

Greyhound Racing NSW says figures that show it spent more money on marketing than on dog welfare and re-homing are misleading.

More than $400,000 of the marketing budget was spent on promoting animal welfare programs, it says.

Greens MP John Kaye has accused the organisation of failing to put its money where its mouth is after the annual report revealed GRNSW's marketing expenditure overtook animal welfare allowances.

GRNSW almost doubled its marketing, digital and media budget from $775,000 in 2013/14 to $1.57 million in 2014/15.

The organisation's 2014/15 spend on animal welfare, vets and the Greyhounds As Pets re-homing program was $1.31 million.

"We were hoping for a much greater increase in the animal welfare expenditure of Greyhound Racing NSW, given the challenges they face," Dr Kaye told AAP.

"What these figures say is that their response to the public exposure of the animal welfare atrocities inside the greyhound racing industry has been to spend up big-time on spinning their way out."

But a statement from GRNSW late on Friday said the breakdown was a "high-level aggregate" that disregarded more detailed breakdowns.

The marketing expenditure is further broken down to marketing and events, and media and digital.

Marketing and events expenditure included $385,500 to promote the Greyhound As Pets program, and an additional $50,000 to promote the Welfare and Integrity Hotline.

"GRNSW has committed to substantial increases in its 2015/16 budget for animal welfare initiatives and research to drive best practice and continuous improvement, including $1.05 million on its Greyhound As Pets program, more than triple the amount spent in 2014/15," GRNSW said in a statement.

The organisation also said the annual report only captured four months since its overhaul.
