NSW soccer coaches fined

Two junior soccer coaches from NSW have been fined for betting on games involving their own teams, in some cases to lose.

Two NSW junior soccer coaches have been sanctioned by Football Federation Australia for betting on matches involving their own club - including in some cases to lose.

FFA has fined them both $1000 with a suspended fine of $5000 payable in the event of another breach of the national code of conduct.

However they haven't named the coaches or the National Premier Leagues club involved.

The bets were placed during the 2015 NPL season and across multiple A-League seasons, according to a statement issued by FFA late Friday afternoon.

FFA's national code of conduct prohibits registered players, coaches, referees and club officials - even at amateur level - gambling on soccer games anywhere, reflecting FIFA statutes.

FFA chief executive David Gallop said the governing body was making the breach public as a "general reminder".

"While the statutes do not differentiate between betting on your own local club or an overseas club, there's a much higher integrity risk when bets are placed on matches where the participant has a direct connection," Gallop said.

"The integrity of football matches at all levels is paramount. Betting on matches is a legal activity but it must have the safeguards of thorough regulation."

Football NSW boss Eddie Moore said NPL players and coaches were given regular reminders about the betting ban.

"NPL matchday newsletters and digital channels carry information on the Code of Conduct," Moore said.

"The ban on betting is very clear.

"In June last year a participant was given a $1000 suspended fine and we used that incident to raise awareness.

"The publication of the sanctions on these two registered junior coaches is another opportunity to warn the football community about the issue."

The coaches can appeal their sanction to FFA's independent disciplinary and ethics committee.
