Oskana set for Melb-Hobart line honours

Melbourne to Hobart yacht race leader Oskana is set to cross the finish line around midnight after leading from the start.

Race leader Oskana continues to set the pace in the Melbourne to Hobart yacht race with the finish line almost in sight.

Skippered by Michael Pritchard, Oksana has been maximising the big south-westerlies by staying further out to sea than the rest of the fleet around the South West Cape.

The Cookson 50 will then head for the calmer waters of Tasmania's east coast and the Derwent River with an expected finish time around midnight Saturday night.

The yacht is no stranger to victory, Oskana was winner of the 2013 Sydney to Hobart (when it was known as Victoire) before being bought by Hobart-based Pritchard last year.

Oskana isn't having it all her own way as second boat Tevake II, with Angus Fletcher at the helm, has gained nearly four miles since the morning by taking the more inshore route.

That put her firmly on top of the handicap leader board, nearly an hour ahead of rival Whistler on corrected time.
