Malcolm Turnbull is reportedly considering creating a new department and ministry to focus on counter-terrorism and domestic security.

The prime minister has discussed with cabinet colleagues about a potential "super portfolio" similar to the UK's Home Office, according to News Corp Australia.

The federal government has commissioned an independent review of Australia's intelligence agencies, including ASIO, with a report due in the first half of 2017.
