Record online shopping day looms

Changes to the way people shop online have pushed eBay's busiest day of the year back by a week.

Christmas shoppers are expected to give eBay its busiest sales day of the year on Monday, December 12, setting new records for online and mobile shopping in the process.

The online sales giant says more people are embracing new click-and-collect and in-store pickup options, meaning its busiest day of the year will be a full week later than in 2015.

Steve Brennen, eBay senior director marketing and retail innovation, said online purchases will get increasingly busy in the week leading up to December 12, and will peak that evening.

Purchases from desktop computers are tipped to peak between 8pm and 9pm, while mobile purchases are expected to be busiest between 9pm and 10pm, Mr Brennen said, with 11 gifts selling every second.
