More than 20 malnourished horses found on a Melbourne property will start rehabilitation after being rescued.
The RSPCA has taken custody of 22 horses from a Bulla property where another 22 were found dead and one more had to be euthanised.
Australian Olympian-turned-horse trainer Bruce Akers, 63, faced court on Monday afternoon charged with 92 counts of animal cruelty and criminal damage offences in relation to the discovery.
Police found the dead horses at a Batey Court property about 3.30pm on Sunday after complaints about a foul smell.
The RSPCA will now rehabilitate the starving horses and eventually rehome them.
Racing Victoria helped with the relocation of the horses and more than 30 people have contacted the RSPCA with offers to rehome the animals.
Earlier on Monday the animal welfare charity admitted it had received a report on March 22 about a horse on the property without sufficient feed.
"We regret that this report didn't accurately describe the situation that was uncovered yesterday and that observations from outside the property did not reveal the true extent of what lay within," it said.
