After months of renovations halted by asbestos findings, the Joan Sutherland Theatre in the Sydney Opera House will officially reopen for a special New Year's Eve event.

The theatre closed in May this year for much-needed upgrades but renovations were stalled after asbestos was found during the construction of an accessibility tunnel alongside the Joan Sutherland Theatre.

It will reopen on Sunday night with a special performance of Opera Australia's production of The Merry Widow at 8pm.
