Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney is under "active consideration" to serve as US Secretary of State along with other candidates, Vice President-elect Mike Pence has told Fox News.

Romney, who met with President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday, was a critic of Trump during the campaign.

Meanwhile, President-elect Donald Trump said on Sunday he is considering retired General James Mattis for US defense secretary, a day after meeting with him in New Jersey.

Trump said in Twitter that Mattis, a retired US Marine Corps general who previously headed US Central Command, "was very impressive yesterday. A true General's General!"
