RSPCA calls for Tas abattoir closure

The RSPCA has called for the closure of a Tasmanian abattoir after footage showed animals being mistreated.

Footage of pigs, sheep and cows being mistreated at a Tasmanian abattoir has prompted the RSPCA to call for its immediate closure.

The RSPCA says footage taken at an abattoir in the Derwent Valley shows abusive behaviour from a worker, inappropriate use of bolt devices on cattle, pigs and sheep, and repeated stunning of captive animals.

RSPCA chief scientist Bidda Jones on Saturday said the abattoir should be closed while the Tasmanian government investigates.
