RSPCA want evidence SA greyhounds are safe

RSPCA says racing minister Leon Bignell needs to reveal welfare data relating to the number of greyhounds bred, raced and killed in SA.

RSPCA South Australia wants evidence that the local greyhound industry is good, clean and safe following comments from racing minister Leon Bignell.

On Thursday, NSW Premier Mike Baird announced he would ban the industry in the wake of a damning inquiry that found more than 50,000 "uncompetitive" greyhounds were killed in NSW alone.

Mr Bignell responded saying SA would not follow suit because there was no evidence of similar behaviour in South Australia.

RSPCA SA CEO Tim Vasudeva says he's repeatedly requested Greyhound Racing SA publish statistics relating to the number of greyhounds bred, raced and killed in the state.

"If Mr Bignell is confident the industry in South Australia is clean and safe for animals he needs to reveal the evidence to support his claim," Mr Vasudeva said on Sunday.

Greyhound Racing SA said it was disappointed with the NSW decision which came without consultation with the industry.
