Rescue workers are searching for a 22-year-old man who fell off the rocks at Boomerang Beach on the mid-north New South Wales coast this morning.

Chief inspector John Sullivan told SBS the man fell just after 7am and police were not treating it as suspicious.

"It's misadventure at this stage; we're not treating it as anything other than that," he said.

A Westpac helicopter had been assisting with the search alongside coastal patrol and NSW Police.

SBS understands the man had been sitting at the location with friends to watch the sunrise.
