Labor leader Bill Shorten and his foreign affairs spokeswoman will head to South Korea and Japan for talks about rising security tensions in the region.

The visit later this month will include meetings with political leaders, government officials and civil society representatives, Mr Shorten said in a joint statement with Senator Penny Wong.

"It will demonstrate Labor's support for our friends and allies in the face of unprecedented threats from North Korea," he said.
