Singapore Airlines offers passengers compensation after 'traumatic experience'

One passenger died and 104 people were injured when flight SQ321 experienced "sudden extreme turbulence" between London and Singapore.

Singapore Airlines has offered financial compensation to passengers impacted by severe turbulence on flight SQ321 on 20 May.

The background: The flight from London to Singapore encountered what an airline official described as "sudden extreme turbulence" over Myanmar, sending passengers and crew flying and slamming some into the ceiling.

A and 104 people were injured on the flight.

The key quote: "Singapore Airlines deeply apologises to all passengers for the traumatic experience on board flight SQ321 on 20 May 2024. We are committed to providing our full support and assistance during this time." — Singapore Airlines via social media.

What else to know: Passengers who suffered minor injuries have been offered US$10,000 ($15,099) in compensation. Those who were more seriously hurt have been invited to discuss a compensation offer to meet their specific circumstances.

All passengers will receive a full refund.

What happens next: Passengers medically assessed as having suffered serious injuries, requiring long-term medical care, and requesting financial assistance have been offered an advance payment of US$25,000 ($37,900) to address their immediate needs.
