Thanks to a cold front passing over the state, snow has started to fall on Victoria's alps while rain and hail are forecast for Melbourne.

Snow is falling on Victoria's alps and could even reach as low as the Grampians after a cold front crossed the state on Saturday night.

Falls Creek, Mount Hotham, Mount Buller, Mount Baw Baw and Mount Stirling have all received dustings of snow, the Bureau of Meteorology says.

"As we head into the afternoon, we will see the snow level falling to maybe 900m to 1000m, so the Grampians could get a dusting," senior forecaster Michael Efron told AAP.

"It's currently 1.6C at Mount WIlliam in the Grampians so even at that temperature they could get some flurries."

It's not the first snow of the year, but with cold conditions forecast, there is a chance snow will continue falling on Monday.

Victoria is experiencing cold conditions after the passing of the cold front.

After a break, rain and hail are expected to return to most areas, including Melbourne, on Sunday afternoon, Mr Efron said.
