SBS Radio’s National Languages Competition is calling for entries from all year groups across Australia.

Students are asked to upload a short video about what learning a language means to them.

So far the competition has received entries in 33 different languages, with the most submissions coming from Victoria.

Teachers say the competition is important because it puts unique languages, often taught outside of school hours, front and centre.

“We promote our community language schools across different avenues as much as we can,” The Polish School of Sydney President, Alicja Batorowicz told SBS World News.

“It really is important to them to communicate with their families to have that advantage of employment opportunities in the future.”

The schools are competing for a chance to win an iPad Pro and a trip to Sydney’s Luna Park.

“We’ve had a lot of entries from French, also Italian, Arabic and Mandarin,” SBS Radio’s Mandi Wicks, said.

“So if you speak any other language, get your entries in now!”
