A surprise dusting of summer snow has landed on Victorian and NSW alps with another flurry expected.

The Bureau of Meteorology says there's a 50-50 chance of showers or snow falling again on Monday afternoon on Mount Buller, Mount Hotham and Falls Creek in Victoria.

Kate Goodchild says it was "quite a surprise" when a forecast of a few flakes turned out to be five or 10 centimetres at Mount Buller on Sunday night.

"It just started dumping and it was lovely snow too," the Ski Club of Victoria admin manager told AAP on Monday.
 "It's cooled everything down nicely."

Mount Hotham is expected to reach just 4C on Monday.

Melbourne on Sunday shivered its way through its coldest February day in 12 years, reaching just 17.6 degrees.

A small tornado ripped roof tiles from three houses and took down trees and fences in the southeastern suburbs as a blast of cold air from the Southern Ocean crossed the state.
"It's not that uncommon when you have a very cold air mass moving over a warm body of water, with the temperature of Port Phillip Bay about 22 degrees," BoM senior meteorologist Dean Stewart said on Monday.

Mr Stewart says the low that caused the winter blast is heading towards the Southern Ocean and will be replaced by short-lived summery conditions on Wednesday.

Perisher

In NSW, snow fell across Perisher in the Kosciuszko National Park for the first time in 2017.

The temperature dropped to minus 1 degrees as the cold front passed through the resort dropping about five centimetres of snow.

Perisher is expecting a top temperature of nine degrees on Monday followed by another cold night and potentially another snowfalls before it warms up again later in the week.

Richard Phillips, the sales and marketing manager of Perisher Ski Resort told SBS News, was overjoyed by the arrival.

"The first snowfall of the year is always exciting and to see this arrive in February is fantastic."
