Artist Scottie Marsh, who is best known for his 'Kanye kissing Kanye' and 'Casino Mike' murals, painted the artwork depicting Australia's former prime minister in a suit standing next to a second version of himself in a white wedding dress and a veil.

The mural is a statement in support of same-sex marriage as the Australian Bureau of Statistics starts mailing copies of the postal survey.

Marsh told Triple J's he wanted to paint the mural of Mr Abbott after the MP called on Australians to 'protect the family' as they cast their vote.

"When Tony Abbott released that video promoting the 'No' vote, you could almost hear the whole country going, 'What the f***'," he said.

"I was hoping to find a wall in Manly to do [the mural] in his electorate.

"But unfortunately that was a lot harder to find. A lot of people generously offered up walls but they were a bit too small to do anything that had a bigger impact."

Mr Abbott took to his Facebook page on Thursday after the High Court ruled in the federal government's favour to continue the same-sex marriage postal survey.

"It's a real pity that some supporters of same-sex marriage wanted to deny the Australian people their say on this vital topic," he said.

"Nevertheless the High Court has spoken and the postal plebiscite will go ahead and I very much hope you vote to protect the family."
