Australia's truck drivers union has warned lives will be put at risk if a road safety tribunal is scrapped.

The federal government is poised to introduce legislation next week, with support from the Australian Logistics Council, to abolish the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal.

"You're killing people - 12 times the national average of deaths - whilst the big companies that bankroll you are continuing to bankroll your political party," Australian Workers Union national secretary Tony Sheldon told reporters in Sydney on Wednesday.

"Low-cost contracts from retailers, from banks, from the oil companies, are literally killing people on our streets.

"He (Malcolm Turnbull) is literally driving people to the funeral parlours of this country as a result of his ill-conceived political intervention, simply chasing votes."
