US President Donald Trump "expressed regret" at in a phone call with South Korean President Moon Jae-in after the talks, South Korea's presidential office said on Thursday.

"While President Trump expressed regret that he didn't reach an agreement at the Hanoi summit, he made clear his resolve to solve the issue with North Korea through dialogue," a statement from the presidential Blue House said.

Moon suggested he and Trump meet in person soon to continue discussions on the subject, and Trump agreed, the statement added.

In an earlier statement, the presidential office expressed regret at the result of the summit but said "meaningful progress" had been made.

"The fact that President Trump unveiled his intentions to lift or alleviate the sanctions on North Korea in accordance with its denuclearisation measures shows that the discussions between North Korea and the United States have been raised to a new level," the statement read.

Trump said he had walked away from a nuclear deal at his second meeting with Kim, in Vietnam, because Kim had made unacceptable demands on lifting biting US-led sanctions.
