US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, on behalf of President Donald Trump, has offered an Australia Day congratulatory message.

Mr Tillerson talked up the "unbreakable alliance" and "powerful bonds of friendship" the US and Australia share.

"On behalf of President Trump and the people of the United States, I am thrilled to congratulate the people of Australia as you celebrate Australia Day on January 26, 2018," Mr Tillerson wrote in his Australia Day message released by the State Department.

"The United States and Australia share deep bonds of friendship that are truly unique.

"Our alliance is a stabilising force in the region and beyond that has provided for our mutual security and prosperity.

"Our ties continue to strengthen as business, scientific, and cultural connections flourish.

"The United States remains committed to our unbreakable alliance and our powerful bonds of friendship and mateship, based on shared values and shared aspirations for the future.

"As you celebrate Australia Day, know that the people of the United States celebrate with you as your friend, partner, and ally."

The message was delivered as preparations were reportedly being made for Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to fly to Washington DC next month to meet Mr Trump at the White House.

The meeting is expected to take place on February 23 and would be another step toward mending the relationship between the two leaders after their contentious phone call a year ago about Mr Trump accepting refugees held on Manus Island and Nauru.

Mr Turnbull met with Mr Trump in New York in May at an event to honour the 75th anniversary of the US-Australian victory over Japan in the Battle of the Coral Sea.

Next month's planned trip to the US is expected to include a delegation of Australian state premiers and dozens of Australian business executives.
