Trump vows big hike in defence spending

US President Donald Trump has promised "one of the largest increases in national defence spending in American history".

US President Donald Trump has promised to give US military members "the tools they need" to prevent war and, if necessary, "to fight and to win".

In his first speech to a joint session of Congress, he asked for removal of limits on defence spending imposed several years ago and called for a budget that "rebuilds the military" and implements what he said would be "one of the largest increases in national defence spending in American history".

He said on Tuesday night his budget would increase spending on veterans affairs: "Our veterans have delivered for this Nation - and now we must deliver for them."
