"War is Murder" has been spray-painted alongside anarchy symbols on a war memorial outside the Warrandyte RSL in northern Melbourne that honours the lives of those who died during battle.

Warrandyte RSL president Henk Van Der Helm was told about the defaced brick shrine early on Monday morning and went to view the damage alongside other members.

"There was a Vietnam Veteran here this morning and he was disgusted," Mr Van Der Helm told AAP.

"We're all pretty disgusted."

Van Der Helm told The Age: "You come to accept this type of moronic behaviour."

The red paint has since been scrubbed off the monument ahead of Anzac Day commemorations on Tuesday.
