WA Labor may back same-sex civil unions

WA Labor says it will consider civil unions for same-sex couples if it wins the looming state election.

Civil unions for same-sex couples will be considered by WA Labor if it wins the state election, opposition leader Mark McGowan says.

Members of Perth's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex community called on Thursday for all parties to support civil unions and recognise same-sex marriages conducted overseas.

Damian Douglas-Meyer, who married his partner Graham in Canada in 2004, said WA and the Northern Territory were the only Australian jurisdictions to not enact a civil union scheme for same-sex relationships.

"A civil union scheme will enable LGBTI couples to formally register their relationships with the government, helping to eliminate the difficulties they currently encounter in medical emergencies, legal matters and parenting issues in the Family Court," he said.

Mr McGowan told reporters on Thursday he'd consider civil unions if he became premier and they didn't detract from Labor's push for marriage equality nationally.

Premier Colin Barnett said the Liberal party would always address such issues by way of conscience or personal votes.

"There will never be a party position on issues such as that," Mr Barnett said.

The premier personally supports civil unions but not same-sex marriage.

WA Labor have also promised to clear historical convictions for homosexual activity and to introduce 'Best LGBTI Employer of the Year'.
