Live exporters are scrambling to recover Australian sheep found outside animal welfare-approved abattoirs in Oman.

The Australian Live Exporters Council says it discovered sheep outside of approved supply chains as the Muslim nation prepared for the sacrificial Eid al Adha festival.

Exporter representatives are on the ground trying to recover the sheep and ensure they are slaughtered appropriately, it said in a statement on Thursday.
