West Australian paper tipped to cut jobs

The West Australian daily newspaper is expected to slash jobs with the chief executive of parent company Seven West Media emailing staff about redundancies

Jobs are expected to go at The West Australian newspaper as parent company Seven West Media seeks to buy News Corporation's The Sunday Times.

The ABC says Seven West Media chief executive Chris Wharton has sent an email to staff informing them of future job losses as the newspaper undergoes an organisational restructure.

Seven West Media has refused to comment, while the media sector union, the MEAA, says it had no prior warning and is now seeking an urgent meeting with the company.

So far, there is no clarity around how many jobs will go.

"An unstable economic environment and changes to the media industry have presented many new and greater challenges for our organisations," Mr Wharton's email reportedly said.

Seven West Media announced in May that it is in negotiations to acquire The Sunday Times and online news site Perth Now from Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation.

As part of the agreement, there will be news content sharing between The West Australian and News Corp's daily publications in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.

The two media groups already jointly own WA's Community Newspaper Group.
