Woman from remote NT dies of meningococcal

A woman from a remote Northern Territory community has died after being struck down with meningococcal disease.

A woman has died of meningococcal W (MenW) disease in the Northern Territory, one of two confirmed cases in the area.

She was from a remote Top End community, authorities confirmed.

She became unwell on Tuesday and was airlifted to Royal Darwin Hospital but she died on Thursday, the NT Department of Health said.

A second woman in the urban Darwin area was also diagnosed with the disease, but she recovered and was discharged from the hospital.

The cases are not related to an outbreak in Central Australia late last year nor did either case have contact with the other.
