International Women's Day, Ed Sheeran and Australia's comedic duo Superwogs have topped the lists of things that got Australians excited in 2017.

Facebook, Spotify and YouTube have released their annual lists of the nation's top 10 issues, music and videos for the year.

A plethora of posts celebrating women on International Women's Day helped make it the topic Australians talked about most on Facebook.

The March 8 day led the list for the first time, with Facebook saying the result comes in what was a "big year" for discussions by and about women.

Facebook Australia and New Zealand's director of policy Mia Garlick says that included talk about women's marches and the 'me too' movement aimed at raising awareness of sexual harassment and assault.

November's Melbourne Cup generated the second-greatest level of interest among Aussie Facebook users, followed by the debate about same-sex marriage.

On the music front it was British crooner Ed Sheeran who scored a landslide victory with Australian listeners in 2017, according to Spotify.

The singer took out the trifecta of the most streamed artist, track and album in Australia on the online music streaming platform, as well as scoring number one on a list of Australia's top music videos with his 2017 single Shape of You.

Taylor Swift knocked Rihanna off her top perch for the first time in three years when it came to the country's most streamed female artists, while Flume and Sia took out first and second place in a list of the most streamed Australian artists over the year.

But surprisingly among a vast ocean of international online content, it was a pair of Australian comedians that triggered the most laughs to come in first on a list of the nation's favourite YouTube videos this year.

The irreverent online series Superwog topped its list of trending videos, beating Donald Trump, ping pong shots, carpool karaoke and a 12-year-old ventriloquist.

The video skits, by creators Theo and Nathan Saidden, have been viewed more than 156 million times, with their pilot episode reaching nearly three million views since it was first uploaded in July.
