Producer Kylie Grey and reporter Amos Roberts’  observed the struggles of citizens living in the poorest town in France, Denain, which has been described as a barometer of a changing France - one that is shifting its support towards far right political parties.

In the latest episode of 'The Intern Diaries', Amos tells Dateline intern Samuel Yang that Denain was a depressing place to film in. The town has a dying economy and a life expectancy of only 58.

“There were a lot of teenage parents I saw around town with their babies," he says. "It’s a pretty miserable place for a lot of people.”

Spending more than a week filming in Northern France wasn’t a pleasant culinary experience either. Amos says the food was “pretty shocking...the best food I was served in Denain came from one of the Moroccan families we were filming.”
