Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil has outlined the federal government's response to a major review into the immigration system, with a key change to include a reduced intake of 185,000 fewer migrants over the budget’s four-year timeframe.

A new so-called skills in demand has also been announced with clear pathways to permanent residence.

Research and policy think tank the Committee for Economic Development of Australia has welcomed the reforms.
