Tech-education start-up ‘Code Like a Girl’ has secured $60,000 of funding to take their coding classrooms on the road.

The grant from Toyota, will allow the start-up to travel across rural Victoria, with their roaming classroom which is decked out with gadgets and posters.

‘Code Like a Girl’ launched in Melbourne three years ago and runs coding workshops for girls aged 6 to 18.

Co-founder Ally Watson hopes to reach more than 700 students over the next six months.

Ally says the goal of the program is to boost participation in science, technology, engineering, and maths – or stem careers, particularly among girls from low-income families.

“There needs to be more diversity in technology- the people creating the solutions need to come from different backgrounds,” says Ally.

Over the past couple of years, Ally’s helped to teach more than 1,500 girls to code and remains determined to break down barriers to entry.

‘Code Like a Girl’ is already planning to tour interstate - starting with the Adelaide Fringe Festival next year.
