A wholesome gallery of Lionel Messi celebrating Argentina's World Cup win is now the most-liked Instagram post ever.

The footballer has already received 66 million likes, and the adoration for the winning team's captain is still rising.
Argentina beat France on penalties in Sunday's final - bringing home the trophy for the first time in 36 years.

Under the historic post Messi wrote: “CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD!!!!!!!" adding that he had dreamt of the moment so many times it still hadn't sunk in.

Messi is the second-most followed account on Instagram, posting to 405 million followers, overtaken only by fellow footballer Cristiano Ronaldo with 520 million followers.

The post is among a running sheet of other records broken by the victor in this year's World Cup. The Messi has now played the most World Cups games with his 26 appearances, overtaking Germany's Lothar Matthäus.

He also has the most appearances as captain (19 times), most World Cup Man of the Match awards (11), most appearances in the tournament by a male player (5), and is also the first person to assist a goal at five different tournaments.

Before the start of the 2022 World Cup, Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Arjen Robben had each won six Man of the Match awards at World Cup tournaments.

But it was Messi who pulled ahead collecting five in this tournament alone.

Why are people talking about an egg?

The previous record-holder of the most-liked Instagram post was an account with just one photo of an egg. The post from January 2019, with a white background and an average egg in the frame, set out with the intention to break the record.

The "world record egg" currently has 56.1 million likes, meaning Messi beat the post by a clear ten million likes.

At the time of the egg-post, some called it a protest vote against celebrity with the caption seeking to oust then-record holder, Kylie Jenner.
At the time there was a lot of discussion about who was behind the mystery egg. Later, it was claimed by a British advertising agency.
