On the ground in Nicaragua: Daring to speak out against the dictatorship

It is Central America’s forgotten nightmare: Nicaragua. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has said oppression in the country has become even worse after a report by UN investigators in March found Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, the husband-and-wife dictatorship at the country’s helm, had committed crimes against humanity. Extra-judicial executions, arbitrary detention, torture, and persecution on political grounds have all been documented. Since anti-government protests in 2018 the regime has cracked down on dissent. And now the church, long considered the last institution able to speak out, is silenced.
