Spies from Iran target anti-government voices in Australia

Published 25 February 2024, 7:19 am
The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) has reported that more Australians are being targeted for espionage and foreign interference than ever before. Multicultural communities are vulnerable to foreign interference, which involves clandestine, coercive and disruptive operations by foreign actors and their proxies infiltrating the diaspora, meddling with democracy and threatening Australia's social cohesion. The government has previously singled out the Iranian regime as an offender, revealing a foreign interference plot which targeted an Iranian-Australian had been foiled by security agencies. In the first of our series of special reports into foreign interference, community members have told SBS News that cases of intimidation and spying are only escalating - and becoming increasingly bold. This story was produced in collaboration with Niv Sadrolodabaee from SBS Persian.
