Formerly known as the Chooky Dancers, the Djuki Mala (Yolngu) dance troupe hails from the Galiwin’ku Community on Elcho Island off North East Arnhem Land.
The group is known for their sometimes cheeky combinations of contemporary music and traditional dance including their interpretation of which they performed at the Melbourne Comedy Gala in 2009.
‘Djuki Mala continue to redefine the unique physical language they are known and loved for by marrying it with acrobatics and diverse flavours of dance and theatre, and their own keen sense of humour.’
In 2014 they completed a national tour of their self-titled show to and were rewarded with a Helpmann Award nomination for the Best Regional Touring Production in 2014.
