Gold Coast Commonwealth Games nets Patty Mills as seventh ambassador

NBA star Patrick 'Patty' Mills says he's honoured to be the latest ambassador for next year's Commonwealth Games.

The three-time Olympian is the second Indigenous ambassador for the Games, along with Cathy Freeman.

“Cathy Freeman has been an inspiration for me, so it’s a real privilege to be in the same company as her," says Mills, who is both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander.

“I’m a proud Indigenous Australian and I’m excited to spread the word about the Commonwealth Games being in my home country and the return of basketball for the first time since Melbourne 2006.

“Australia’s interest in basketball has grown, especially with a number of Boomers plying their trade in the NBA and our Opals in the WNBA."

Queensland Premier Annasacia Palaszczuk hailed Mills as "an inspiration for many young Australians and a leader within Indigenous communities right across the country".

As part of his ambassador role, Mills will tour far north Queensland in early August, with stops in Cairns and Townsville, which will also host the preliminary rounds of the 2018 Commonwealth Games basketball competition.

But Aussie fans won't be able to see the San Antonio Spurs star in action next year, with Mills unable to take the court at the Commonwealth Games due to NBA commitments.
