Indigenous chef sets the table for Royal guests

There will be no shortage of activity on Sydney Harbour today, especially among the kitchen decks of several navy ships.

On HMAS Leeuwin, a young Indigenous chef is leading the team that will serve lunch for Prince Harry and his official party.

Leading Seaman Brad Burnett is one of more than 160 Indigenous members of the Royal Australian Navy, and he's been given the task of serving a royal luncheon.

“Being given the chance to cook for royalty is something that all chefs dream about," Leading Seaman Burnett said.

HMAS Leeuwin commander Lieutenant Wendy Stewart has every confidence in her kitchen and its leader.

“I think he'll do very well, he's had a lot of preparation a lot of support from his team around him so that's really good. Both my cooks are good cooks so that's allowed them to produce something hopefully very spectacular for tomorrow," Lieutenant Commander Stewart said.

Fellow crew members agreed that when the pressure's on, he’s the guy they want in charge.

With just four people working in the cramped quarters of Leeuwin's galley, Mr Burnett’s leadership qualities will have to come to the fore.

And he hopes his leadership qualities will inspire other young Indigenous people to follow in his footsteps.

"I think it's a great opportunity for them, they've got a guaranteed pay cheque, they're guaranteed a great life, and there are a lot of options available for people. It makes me proud to show my brothers and sisters that I can do other things in life and get a very good career," he said.
