A man has been charged with murder after his partner's body was found near a riverbed.

The 51-year-old First Nations woman was found unresponsive near the Todd River in Alice Springs early on Monday morning, and her 49-year-old partner was charged with murder on Tuesday.

Police previously said an edged weapon was used in the alleged incident.
The man was taken into custody on Monday after contacting police and advising the woman was unresponsive about 12.20am.

Officers arrived 11 minutes later and attempted CPR, but the woman was declared dead a short time later.

Police said it was the Northern Territory’s first alleged victim of domestic violence homicide for 2025.

The man was due to appear in Alice Springs Local Court on Wednesday, charged with murder.
Eight Aboriginal women died as a result of domestic violence in the NT between June and November 2024.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women are 7.6 times more likely to die by homicide than other Australian women, the Our Watch violence prevention group says.
