Murri Carnival postponed due to COVID-19

Organisers have made the decision to postpone next week's Murri Carnival, due to concerns about COVID-19 in the state, particularly the new UK variant of the virus.

The Queensland Murri Carnival has been postponed for a second time with organisers saying they've made the decision based on the current COVID-19 concerns in Brisbane.

The Carnival was originally scheduled to run in September, has been postponed. 

In a statement posted to social media, the Queensland Aboriginal and Islander Health Council, a major sponsor of the Carnival, confirmed the news.

"We simply do not want to take the risk of out competitors, coaches and spectators coming into contact with COVID-19 at this time, or the UK strain being taken outside of the Greater Brisbane Area," QAIHC CEO James William said.

"This decision was made with the health of our local communities and Queensland as our priority.

"Whilst this is not the news we were hoping to deliver, the health and wellbeing of the community is paramount and we hope that you all stay sage, healthy and COVID-aware during this time."

On Monday the Queensland Government announced the city's three-day lockdown would end, but some restrictions, including mandated mask wearing for residents of Greater Brisbane would continue.

The 2020 New South Wales due to the Coronavirus, with the tournament to be now held on the south coast on the October long weekend.

A three-week competition named Tribal League was held in November, with strict COVID-19 safety guidelines.
