The 10-day cultural light festival launches this Friday night set against Central Australia’s beautiful backdrop of the ancient MacDonnell Ranges.

Parrtjima’s 2020 theme of ‘Lifting our Spirits’ promises to do exactly that as it showcases the world’s oldest living culture through a series of dynamic Indigenous-themed light shows and installations.

The event will see the MacDonnell Ranges illuminated in various colours and designs with the foreground of the Alice Springs Desert Park hosting large-scale audio and visual installations.

The Todd Mall will also feature events like music, talks and films throughout the festival, including a Deep Listening talk as hosted by Wiradjuri Journalist Stan Grant and ABC personality Tracey Holmes.

Parrtjima will this year focus on water, the cosmos and connection to Country.

Northern Territory Major Events Company CEO, Tim Watsford, said the event is a must.

“Parrtjima is like nothing you’ve seen before. If you have the slightest chance to attend this year, do. You will not regret your decision, and you will remember the experience for the rest of your life. It really is that kind of event,” he said.

“The strength of feeling people have for Parrtjima is clear by the demand we’ve seen for our Todd Mall program of events, which have a wait list. This is great news for Alice Springs, where businesses will benefit from the number of people out and about experiencing Parrtjima.”

Parrtjima has been held on Arrernte Country at Mparntwe (Alice Springs) every year since its inception in 2017.
