Wulli Wulli and Goreng Goreng woman Taliqua Clancy and teammate Mariafe Artacho del Solar have been defeated in straight sets in the women's beach volleyball gold medal match by the United States.

Hopes were high for the pairing to claim the first gold medal in the sport since Kerry Pottharst and Natalie Cook won on Bondi Beach at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

The American duo April Ross and Alix Klineman made a strong start to the match, taking the first set 21-15 on the back of a powerful serving game.

The Australians had a more positive start to the second set but nine straight points swung momentum straight back to the Americans.

Clancy and Artacho del Solar managed to bridge the gap to three points towards the back end of the set, but it wasn't enough as they went down 21-16.
