Tjanpi Desert Weavers have taken home a prestigious literary award in the NT

The group won the award in the Best Children's or Young Adult category for their story on how tangki (donkeys) came to be in the community of Ernabella.

“This is a book for everyone, not just children."

That is how the judges of the NT Chief Minister’s NT Book Awards described the best children's winning entry from the Tjanpi Desert Weavers.

"It’s charming, original and quirky," the judges said.

"The woven sculpture illustrations are unique, effective and full of character. From the making of the props to the beguiling story line, this is truly a book about the Northern Territory. A must for every school library.”

The book, Tangki Tjuta uses English and Pitjantjatjara language to tell the heart warming story of how tangki (donkeys) came to be in the community of Ernabella.

The Tjanpi Desert Weavers say they hope the inclusion of the Pitjantjatjara language, one of hundreds of First Nations languages, will encourage people to learn more about the history and life in an Aboriginal community in the far north of South Australia.

“It is a wonderful and joyous recognition for the many community members involved in the project," the Tjanpi weavers said.

"It acknowledges the storytelling, craft-making abilities and innovative arts practice of APY grandmothers, mothers and daughters and the love they have for their kids. It shares these stories of changing life in communities and reflects the joy, humour and resilience of Pukatja families."
