Weekend Playlist - A trip to the Torres Strait

This weekends playlist takes us to the beautiful Torres Strait Islands, with some new and established artists who deliver a unique islan style take on folk, hip hop and contemporary music.

Chris Tamwoy - Tunnel Jam

The opening track off talented young musician Chris Tamwoy's debut EP, Ngaw Laag, Tunnel Jam showcases the incredible dexterity and melodic talent of the guitarist, layered with beat boxing.

Mau Power ft. King Kadu - Warupau Nur (Sing Strong)

A powerful track off Mau Powers debut album The Show Will Go On, Warupau Nur talks of staying strong in culture and passing on knowledge. Featuring King Kadu from Murray Island with drums and chants this is a song that will move you.

Busby Marou - Underlying Message

Off their second, self titled album, Underlying Message is a timeless track from the laidback duo from Rockhampton, Thomas Busby and Jeremy Marou whose catchy and smooth guitar underscores Busby' vocals.

Tagai Buway - Culture Remainz ( I Am The Future)

From the Song Nation compilation, Culture Remainz was written and produced under a 5 day mentoring process through Desert Pea Media with school students and staff at Tagai State College on Thursday Island. This song 'aimed to create a story that would recognise and advocate awareness of the struggles of the past, yet celebrate TSI culture and represent the different cultural groups that make up the Zenadh Kes (Torres Strait).'

Christine Anu - Sik O

A haunting and beautiful melding of traditional song  and production by David Bridie from Anu's classic album Stylin Up.
