Bahrain-Merida heads to California with Dennis as GC hope

Australian Rohan Dennis will headline Bahrain-Merida's general classification (GC) ambitions for the 13-19 May Amgen Tour of California.

The seven-day men’s stage race begins in Sacramento and will cover over 1280 kilometres to Pasadena, the 11th time in the event’s 14-year history that the peloton will travel from north to south in the Golden State.
All stages of the 2019 Amgen Tour of California will be broadcast and streamed live on SBS Viceland, the website and SBS OnDemand.
“We have high goals, we have a strong and compact team. Without a TT this year, stages with uphill finishes will be a priority for GC," said sports director Tristan Hoffman.

"There are two main sprint stages and two other with the possibility of a select group sprint. Depending on GC time gaps after the mountain finish at the penultimate stage, the fight for the GC will most likely go until the last stage.

"We have two main focuses; Rohan Dennis for GC, no matter that this years' race will be without a TT. It will be challenging for Rohan but still, the goal is top five.

"He proved in the past with two stage victories and two runner-up placements in the GC that Tour of California is suitable for him.

"We have all rights to expect stage wins with either Phil Bauhaus at sprint stages, Ivan Cortina or another rider for breakaway stages.

Also in the lineup providing support and horsepower are Australian Heinrich Haussler, Marcel Sieberg and Hermann Pernsteiner.
